SS21 Trend Report

Writer's picture: ScribeScribe

With the usual fanfare around fashion weeks being removed in 2021 the focus was back on craftsmanship and message of the clothes. As social calendars are still questionable, with different levels of interactions possible across the globe, some designers have either created fabulous, infectious clothes to put the joy back into dressing up while others have focused on classic pieces which act as an extension of the past year’s comfortable clothing.

Fantastical dresses

Full skirts, layers of tulle and embellishment. Of particular note was Molly Goddard’s butter yellow Savannah dress which draws inspiration from the ballet tutus she wore as a child. With slim shoulder straps and a hand-smocked bodice complemented by an empire-cut waist and a voluminous maxi skirt. Pair it with an elegant gold necklace and chain loafer mules to create the perfect balance between a ballroom-ready look and comfortable wear.

Escapism

Versace’s pink skirt patterned with a multicolored Trésor de la Mer print – meaning 'sea treasures' in French – depicting jewel-encrusted starfish provides the perfect level of whimsy. Loewe’s punchy printed oversized shirt, bursting with bright color and surrealist floral works by respected British artist Anthea Hamilton are escapism at its finest.

Cut-out dresses

From Aje, to Khaite to Victoria Beckham, cut-out’s were big on the SS21 stage. Deconstructed clothing with unconventional cut-outs on the waists include midi-dresses, linen blazers and tops. Strikingly feminine, alluring and arty all at once.

Hot pink

An explosion of fuchsia, watermelon and hot pinks were prevalent on the catwalk. Jacquemus' colour-blocked dresses are joyfulness at its best with square necklines and hook fastenings curving gracefully down the body. Taller Marmo’s fuchsia-pink Mrs Ross kaftan dress is imbued with the free-spirited zeitgeist of the 1970s decade.

Denim

Denim was used across all categories from FRAME’s utility retro style Le Jane jumpsuit to Isabel Marant’s 80s’ style puffed sleeved pink denim Laure dress. The key shift in jeans is a move from slimmer silhouettes to a more relaxed, slouchy fit. Victoria Beckham’s SS21 denim encompasses a 70’s mood with high waists and wide legs, while Celine’s SS21 styles are reminiscent of the ‘90’s skater girl style.

Shorter hemlines

Replacing the midi trend of recent years were ‘60’s style micro skirts and mini slip dresses as seen at Jacquemus with their La robe draped mini dress and Miu Miu’s button embellished Cady mini skirt.

Puffed sleeves

Exaggerated puffed sleeves have become a catwalk staple over the last few years with the trend continuing into 2021. From dresses with huge ballooned sleeves at Loewe to billowy blouses at Simone Rocha.

Statement trousers

Moving away from sweatpants and leggings, SS21 offers plenty of statement making pants. Wide-leg, roomy trousers were seen everywhere from silky pastel extra high waisted at MaxMara to breezy linen at Jacquemus. Wide leg pants were given a delicate floral feel at Oscar De La Renta with delicate hand painted flowers.

Suits of the season are oversized, effortless and mannish. The Row colour palettes are neutral with double breasted jackets worn over full pleated pants. At Proenza Schouler, easy-to-wear styles come in caramel hues with long trousers.

Matching sets

Matching sets continue to have their moment. Pieces which can be used as separates as well as together remain popular choices. Bright bold prints in silk at Etro with flowy skirts are perfect for summer. While Hermès’ delicate fabrics remain timeless and chic.
